An invitation to Root & Reset: A Day in Nature
Time and again, after years working in outdoor recreation, I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact of experiential learning. Root & Reset: A Day in Nature is a day-long immersive program that provides opportunities to have fun, learn and actively reconnect with nature. At the end of July, the learning engagement team is heading to the Genesee Outdoor Experiential Learning Center to lead two days of guided hiking, art making, gentle yoga and reflection. Located in the foothills just west of Denver, trails wind through trees and wildflowers wave in dappled light. As the fast pace and hot temperatures of summer approach, I invite you to venture out of the city, slow down and smell the wood roses.
Five reasons to root and reset:
- Change your surroundings and explore a new space
Whether enjoying the Gardens or a new trail, changing our environment can change our perspective. A peaceful location with natural elements creates a unique setting for learning and reflection. This is what the kids are talking about when they tell us to go outside and touch grass. - Reconnect with yourself and others
How often do you look inward to reflect? How often do you create connections in your community? Even the most unique plants don’t grow in isolation! During Root & Reset, you'll find space for both quiet reflection and genuine connection, the kind that can foster deeper relationships with yourself and nature. - Look closely
In a world of screens, what better way to root yourself in reality than slowing down to appreciate the small things? A meandering walk in nature is an opportunity to reframe and redirect your attention to your senses—what you see, hear or feel. A hike guided by Vanessa “The Nerdy Naturalist” will include lots of stopping to look closely, practice visual thinking skills and identify plants. - Be creative
The current exhibition at the Gardens, Jaume Plensa: A New Humanism, reminds us that art isn’t restricted to just paintings on walls. Some art belongs outdoors, illuminated by natural light and surrounded by life. Our afternoon opens into some lightly structured time outside for nature journaling, where the scenery and whatever catches your eye lead the way. -
Move mindfully
Reset your mind-body connection with meditation in motion. Even a mindful walk can help us re-center and refocus to build a foundation for clarity. The day winds down with a guided gentle yoga session. It is a chance to breathe, reflect on what the day stirred up and tune into what you need, alongside others doing the same.
