Urban Nature, the Gardens' 2008 signature exhibition, explores the intersection of nature and urban culture. Art and horticulture are the tools city dwellers can employ to evoke the natural world as concrete and steel steadily encroach on our green space.
Check out denverurbannature.com for more ways your neighbors are greening up their spaces in the city.
The exhibit features paintings from over a dozen street-style artists including internationally recognized Lady Pink, Mac, and Siloette. New York City activist Lady Pink has transitioned from painting subway trains in the 70s and 80s, to creating grand scale murals throughout New York City and lecturing at universities across the country. Phoenix-based Mac draws inspiration from the Mexican and Chicano culture of the American Southwest. Siloette, who currently resides in Los Angeles, is recognized mainly for her feminine subject matter, unique flowing style and organic ingredients.
Well known local artists include: Amanda Marie, Elisabeth Bunker, Delton Demarest, Dread, Sophie Fernandez, Javier Flores, Jolt, Mission, Adam Moorhead, Todd Robinson & Ian Rumley, and Wiser.
Street murals have been created on temporary panels situated within the natural beauty of the Gardens' York Street site, creating visual relationships that both surprise and resonate.
Green up with city-wise planting techniques and exhibits designed to get you into the rhythm of nature in the heart of the city. Some program examples include: a discussion on the healing power and deliciousness of wild plants, classes on raising chickens in the city, and hands-on instruction in creating gardens for balconies or terraces.
See a video of featured artist, Mac discussing the mural he has on display at the Gardens. Other exhibits complement “Urban Nature” including “The Art of Nature” exhibit at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield.
