Expert-led Lectures Address Art and Science
Since the age of enlightenment, people have categorized art and science as separate, distinct practices, but there is more overlap than you'd think. This winter, join the School of Botanical Art & Illustration for lectures featuring experts in the field and expand your knowledge of art, botany and nature.
Your first opportunity is with renowned botanical artist Deborah Shaw. Shaw is an accomplished artist who has exhibited her work internationally. She also teaches botanical illustration worldwide, including with the School of Botanical Art & Illustration at the Gardens.
Later in February, for Black History Month, the School of Botanical Art & Illustration presents an online lecture on Black America and Expressions of Nature with Abra Lee. Lee is a horticulturist invested in revealing the often-untold role Black Americans had in the history of gardening in America. During this lecture, Lee will share “love letters” found during her research. Sit back in the comfort of your home on a cozy winter day and be inspired by Lee’s passion for elevating marginalized voices and examining our country’s past.
Complementing the current exhibition on display in the Freyer – Newman Center’s Bonfils-Stanton Gallery, Agave: Symbol and Spirit, learn all about agaves from Scott Preusser. Preusser, assistant curator of cactus and succulent collections at the Gardens, shares about the fascinating history and botany of agaves.
Register for a class or talk today and discover the many surprising intersections between art, nature and wellbeing.
