Children and Family Make and Take: Traditions of Dia de los Muertos: Papier-Mache Calaveras

Cartonería (papier-mâché) is a form of Mexican folk art used to create objects that are essential to celebrating Mexican holidays and festivals, including Día de los Muertos. Calaveras, or skulls, are an important part of Día de los Muertos. Instead of representing fear and death, calaveras symbolize the celebration of life and are often placed on the ofrenda as an offering. Join us to explore the artistic traditions of Día de los Muertos as you view Calacas Y Catrinas a display of larger-than-life skulls and skeletons hand-painted by Colorado Latinx artists. Then, try your hand at painting and decorating your own papier-mâché calaveras created by contemporary Mexican artists Óscar Becerra and Ruben Mica.

This program is part Denver Botanic Gardens' "Yo Soy" series. Yo Soy" is a year-long series of exhibitions and events that serves as a platform to showcase the multifaceted aspects of Latino cultures, locally and globally. Denver Botanic Gardens is hosting a variety of programs that include art exhibits, workshops and activities, both onsite and out within the community.
