Adventure Awaits in South Africa this September

February 12, 2025 Exhibits Department

South Africa is bursting with life—home to an astonishing array of plants, wildlife and a thriving contemporary art scene. Experience the breathtaking beauty of the cape and witness the fusion of art and science by joining the Cape Floral Region Botanical Safari.

Associate Director of Learning Engagement & Interpretation Hannah Craft and Senior Curator and Director of Outreach Panayoti Kelaidis share why you should take this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

What makes South African plant life so unique?

PK: Almost all of this trip takes place in the Cape Floral Kingdom: one of the world’s six floral kingdoms—the smallest and possibly with some of the most primitive plant groups. We have introduced dozens of species of South African plants to cultivation since the 1980s, when Denver Botanic Gardens began to cultivate global partnerships. The Gardens had the first public garden featuring cold-hardy South African plants, which are still showcased in the Steppe Garden.

This tour explores South African plants, but also art. What is the art scene like in South Africa?

HC: Most of the Gardens’ travel programs are botany-focused, some even including specimen collection. This September, we'll host the first trip specifically designed to illuminate the intersections of art and science. The creative community in South Africa is vibrant, diverse and constantly evolving, with a rich blend of traditional and contemporary influences. From painting and sculpture to performance art, fashion and photography, there's a strong emphasis on storytelling, identity and the impact of the past on the present. Our itinerary includes optional visits to contemporary art museums, botanical gardens, sculpture gardens and galleries.

What are some of your plans for the Cape Floral botanical safari?

HC: I am looking forward to exploring and learning together and finding ways to interject creativity into our daily adventures. We'll have chances to meet with curators, horticulturists, artists and scientists who will share about the unique ecology, cultures and history of South Africa. There will be guided group tours as well as days to explore on your own, providing time to find your own park of South Africa or rest, relax and reflect.

What do you hope people will get out of this trip?

HC: Travelers will have a renewed sense of what makes them feel connected to the natural world. After exploring the immense diversity of life in South Africa, I hope people will have a deeper understanding of how biodiversity contributes to healthy ecosystems. Folks might even find inspiration for their own home gardens, including plants that are native to South Africa that grow successfully in Colorado. Last but not least, we will indulge in some incredible food, and I hope people will enjoy exploring new culinary experiences with South African food and wine.

PK: I believe participants will be bowled over by the gorgeous landscapes and fantastic natural resources—and fall in love with the indigenous art and regional cultures.

Your South African adventure awaits. Get full details and register today.
